The eye of the storm

People new to community management underestimate how difficult running a community can be. If the waves are steady, underneath are a hundred divers holding them steady. In reality, wherever you have a handful of people doing anything, you have drama. It's part of human nature.

Experience gives one the calmness not to be shocked by events one has seen a hundred times before. Having to moderate 10 pages of interpersonal drama between people in a community a thousand strong is not unusual in a week but that highly depends on quality and maturity of the people within the community. On an average community on the internet though, that is not unusual.

Generally speaking, if government officials or institutional mediators of some sort are not involved, moderation is at normal levels.

Understanding the nature of the challenges that people create for one another in any social organization is essential to taking a calm, steady, long-term approach to solving problems.
