Understanding World Lab

This article assumes you have read the Boundless whitepaper. If you have not done so, do so first and come back here.

About World Lab

World Lab serves as the development hub for any Polis integrated with Boundless Synapse, a digital society "Polis" creation technology under development by Boundless.

Synapse helps connect users and user data across communities and is critical to Boundless's vision of creating freedom. World Lab exists to allow multiple communities to incubate the technology.

It's in World Lab that people in their Initial Contribution Phase make their contribution to World Lab efforts. In this article you'll learn about what World Lab is, why it was created it, and how to begin contributing.

World Lab & Boundless

Boundless created World Lab as a development hub for anyone looking to use Boundless Synapse to build a digital society like Boundless Agora.

This image shows boundless humanity initiatives, connection between world lab, synapse, and agora.

An agnostic development hub ensures Agora’s inspiration can directly drive outcomes for alternative societies.

Agora empowers World Lab

Those seeking to join Boundless Agora must first contribute to any project listed in World Lab. This way Boundless empowers an ecosystem of Poleis not just a single Polis.

Note: Individuals are free to decide to join a different Polis (that is accepting citizens) than Agora if they prefer to do so at the end of their 60-day Initial Contribution Phase.
The initial pathway for participation within any Polis connected via World Lab follows a consistent starting point: finishing a project contribution within World Lab, achieved either by initiating and completing a new project or by joining and fulfilling significant work on an existing effort.

Polis choice & membership

Boundless World Lab hosts a wide variety of projects in which individuals may participate in order to qualify as official volunteers of Boundless.

All projects are open source and are presented by non-profits, communities, and corporations—“Poleis”—from around the world. Regardless of which project an individual contributes to, every project is a pathway to become a volunteer of Boundless.*

Participants also have the option to pursue “citizenship” in the Polis of their choice but only if they made a project with that Polis in mind first and only if that Polis accepts new citizens.

Citizenship in a different Polis may mean applying for volunteer status in another non profit or membership in a different community.

Boundless is not in charge of other Poleis so it cannot comment on their processes. For now, all you need to know is that you can become a volunteer for Boundless by contributing a finished project to any Polis.
